Often people get confused with “realizing mistakes” and “regretting” — they are NOT the same.
Where realizing the mistakes that you have committed and learning from them is great for you, regretting anything makes you weak and vulnerable to low self-esteem.
Let’s take an example for a better understanding:
You and your friend are on a bike, a small accident happened, and your friend broke a finger. Now, there are two ways in which you can think:
- Mistake realization — It was a stupid mistake, I shouldn’t have driven the bike this fast. In fact, I will never drive this fast again.
- Regret — My friend is suffering because of me, I am such a bad person, I will never forgive myself for what I did.
While the first option is the best way to handle the situation, the second option will make you stressed for very long (or maybe lifelong). It will make you inferior and weak from the inside and vulnerable which is not good in any way.
Regret is the thing that you do not want at any cost. Recall what someone says when you get in a fight, they say, “I will make you regret it”.
Why?
Because regret is the ultimate punishment!
And if you’re regretting anything, ultimately you’re punishing yourself. You will not learn anything by doing so and might do the same mistake again.
What say?
