Sometimes we all do things that we don’t truly understand and it doesn’t end well, generally. We fail because we don’t understand the basics or fundamentals.
Taking an example of SEO, lots of SEO beginners just memorize things like link building, content marketing, internal linking, and other stuff. They just accept that these are the things that you need to do in order to rank a website, which works in most cases but only up to a point. With that kind of experience, you can only do SEO for small companies, if you want to work with big companies, you will have to understand the basics.
If you don’t know the basics, you can’t innovate.
Me
Think of it in this way, if you accumulate lots of information without knowing the “why”, you can only know what people have done in the past. You can’t take the idea to a whole new level.
I really love Albert Einstein’s quote on this:
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.
Albert Einstein
That word “simply” in the quote above really points out knowing the basics/fundamentals that I was talking about.
Taking another example of marketing, you’re given a job to market a new productivity app and if you don’t understand the basics of marketing and business, you can only achieve what others have achieved. You can’t do an extraordinary marketing campaign that blows everyone’s mind.
Do you think a beginner marketer can create an ad campaign like the Coinbase Super Bowl ad?
No! Not unless he/she understands the basics.
I am just talking about business and marketing but this applies everywhere. People who innovate, know the basics.
